Thu, Oct 18, 2018

At Cafe Express, Eyre Square, Christmas is all about sharing — sharing experiences, sharing stories, and sharing festive feasts.

Christmas is a favourite time of year. Imagine getting the gang together, wrapping up snugly for chats sheltered beneath the Cafe Express canopy on the corner of Eyre Square. With the Christmas Market just outside, you get a front row seat for all the festivities while wrapping your hands around a hot coffee, some say it is the best coffee in town.

Acers – How to Ace it

Mon, Oct 15, 2018

The Acer palmatum, or Japanese maple, seems to be high on the wish list of trees for gardens and often when I meet clients to discuss their garden plans it’s one of the plants they’d like included. I’m not surprised as it’s such a pretty, elegant tree – but if you’d like to grow one there are a few things it’s useful to know.

The awaking of Augusta - Marriage

Thu, Oct 11, 2018

My dear Miss Persse, I have read over many times the letter which you wrote to me a fortnight since when returning Roderick Hudson. Am I too presumptuous in thinking that there is something more in it than a mere critique on that book? I have thought over and over again on the subject and have at length determined to ask if I may write freely to you - on the most momentous question affecting a man and woman’s life…..’

Waterside, c1885

Thu, Oct 11, 2018

Some 100 years before this photograph was taken, most of the area we are looking at would have been under water, the river covered much of what is Woodquay today. Most of the people who lived in the area would have been small farmers or fishermen, their houses (outside the city walls) made of blocks of stone, often with moss stuffed into the crevices and a roof covered partly with straw, partly with turf. The river provided a rich source of food, though in the city, the fishery, from the Salmon Weir to the sea, was privately owned.

When life gives you lemons

Thu, Oct 11, 2018

The highlight of many a tourist's visit to the west of Ireland is often a trip to the Aran Islands. As such, you may guess that the primary income of the residents of Inis Mor is from visitors to their little paradise. The only way to access the island is by boat or plane. During the summer season waves of people come with every ferry, and with each arrival tourists swarm to view the island, hiring bikes and taking bus tours. They all need to be fed and watered and costs can be high, as everything not produced on the islands must be brought by ferry.

Culturally, the Aran Islands were for centuries very isolated from developments in other parts of Ireland and Western Europe, and thus reliant primarily on their own resources for both entertainment and news. They have a strong tradition of self-sufficiency in a very harsh environment with the land consisting of unyielding slabs of limestone, resistant to traditional farming methods. Although the island is only two miles wide and nine miles long, there are 5,000 miles of man-made stone walls. By mixing layers of sand and seaweed on top of rock the islanders created fertile soil to grow potatoes and other vegetables and to provide grazing for cattle and sheep. These in turn provided wool and yarn to make patterned hand-knitted jumpers, shawls and caps, hand-woven skirts, trousers, jackets, hand-made shoes known as pampooties, and hides for the iconic island currachs for fishing and trading with the mainland.

Narcissi – it’s now or never

Tue, Oct 09, 2018

A few weeks ago we spoke about the tiny, early spring bulbs that flower in late winter and at the very start of spring. This week let’s consider narcissi – known to most of us as daffodils. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the bulb and the earlier it flowers, the sooner you need to get it in the ground to allow root and shoot formation in time for the main event – blooming. It’s still a bit early for tulips as current advice is to plant them when it gets really cold – November or December is fine and you can even get away with planting them in January, as all but the early ones don’t flower till April or May.

The Mindful Commute - “Be Part Of The Solution”

Fri, Oct 05, 2018

There has been even more traffic talk than usual in Galway this week with the announcement that the €600 million budget has been released for Galway’s ring road. The announcement has been met with mixed reactions, but I think one thing we can all agree on is that this latest development is part of, but not the complete, solution to Galway’s traffic problems.
