On Monday August 12 health and wellbeing expert Dorothy Scarry, a qualified primary and secondary teacher, will host a wellbeing and resilience workshop in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel.

The objective of the workshop is to enable students to begin to take ownership of their personal wellbeing and resilience through identifying stressors and establishing a plan for interventions for themselves that they can maintain while they make the school transition and beyond. The practical aspects of starting secondary school, such as dealing with new teachers, timetables, movement between rooms, homework, etc, are also covered in part three of the workshop. Everyone will leave the workshop with a bespoke personal wellbeing plan.

Tuesday November 20, 1984, was a sad day in Galway. It was the day Jimmy Cranny died, and though he had no family, his extended family of many thousands of people he had taught to swim mourned him and marked the passing of a legend. He could be seen at the seashore virtually every evening of the summer for many, many, years teaching children the basics of swimming, and as some of them progressed to competitive swimming, he provided early morning training sessions for them at the canal on a daily basis.

She was employed as a housemaid, and joined two other house staff, a parlourmaid, and a cook Delia Earley, with whom she shared an attic room. She and Delia became warm friends, and shared a terrifying ordeal when they were trapped together on the roof of the castle as it burnt in a raging fire on July 26 1910.

Hello, my name is Paschal, this is Socks (the Horse )... I'm a Galway man through and through, living in Craughwell, Co. Galway. I was in the defence forces for 38 years, involved in the RDF Unit or the FCA Unit and stationed in Loughrea for 15 years. For the past 26 years on and off I have brought my family, friends and the odd wedding couple around on my horse and cart. Then I started bringing tourists and the public around the city, I love doing what I am doing, it gives me great joy! There is such a great buzz in Galway, if you're in bad form and need a lift, just walk down shop street, high street or Quay street, you're sure to meet a smiling, friendly face to snap you out of it. We have some much here in Galway, the lakes, the Sea, the people and the laughter!

We know that horse races were organised in different parts of County Galway from the middle of the 18th century, in places like Kilconnell, Eyrecourt, Rahasane, Ballinasloe, Ballymoe, Carraroe, and Bermingham House near Tuam. They were known as ‘racing matches’. In 1764, there was a five day meeting held at Knockbarron near Loughrea, and between 1829 and 1857, 15 meetings were held in Kiltulla near Ballybrit. In 1867, a series of races was organised at Bushfield near Oranmore.
