Such were the demands on many young men, not motivated by any political ideal, or heroic pressure, to fight for their king and country in 1914, but were driven by the sense of advtenture and excitement, that war often evokes in the hearts of young men, that they queued in their thousands to answer the call to arms. If unsuccessful, due to some physical deficiency (although medical check-ups were usually just a formality), family often used its influence to gain admission to the armed forces.

At this time of year the kitchen garden is in full swing with warmer, longer days allowing edible crops to mature and ripen. There’s still lots of work to do though to keep your plot productive and ensure a succession of edibles right through the summer months. If you’re lucky enough to have a designated kitchen garden with raised beds, brick paths and maybe even south facing walls for ripening fruit, you’ll have room to grow pretty much anything you like and lucky neighbours probably benefit from plenty of edible presents just now!

Lawn mowing can seem a never-ending task at this time of year. I suppose the rain responsible for our lush forty shades of green is what encourages the grass to grow like Usain Bolt sprinting towards an Olympic record. Imagine if you could just press a button and close the roof like they do on Wimbledon’s Centre Court....

To my mind, there are three levels of food in Irish pubs. At one end is the traditional pub, where your only dining decision is whether to have the cheese and onion or salt and vinegar. And then there is proper pub grub, comforting soups, tasty sandwiches, and old favourites like bangers and mash or lasagne, usually in overly generous portions. At the other extreme of the scale are the ones who take themselves very seriously, where you can expect such delights as 'roasted marrow bones with curried clams in a grilled octopus reduction'.

What better time than summer to think about letting some light into your home? The long, bright days offer the perfect opportunity to think about some simple ways to freshen up your living space by bringing the outdoors indoors.
While plants are the obvious way to do this, you do not have to have half a forest in your home to give it that outdoor feel. With a bit of creativity you can create a calming sanctuary inspired by nature.

Thu, Jul 07, 2016
As the economy continues to grow and more people decide to renovate their homes, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) is warning consumers to only use NSAI quality certified products and installers when insulating their properties.
Homeowners have spent more than €624 million on renovations and extensions under the Government’s Home Renovation Incentive Scheme since it was introduced in October 2013. That is €6 million a week spent on doing up properties. NSAI certification and inspection officer, Robin Byrne, said he has come across examples of substandard insulation work during his time with NSAI.

Hopefully over the next week or two we will get some of the summer weather we are expecting. Whether this is wishful thinking or not, the fact remains that we turn the summer in to one long happy hour, where food and drink play host to most events and it’s easy to lose track of what we consume.

There are three keys to a genuine weight loss (real fat loss) plan – diet, exercise, and metabolism correction. All three keys interconnect – one will not work without the other. BodyMind Balancing is a comprehensive, holistic, treatment which combines aspects of Chinese medicine, kinesiology and hatha yoga. It is a simple, safe, non-invasive technique which treats ’disease’ on all levels by re-establishing communications between the systems within the body and mind, restoring equilibrium, and promoting good health.
Our bodies have the innate ability to heal themselves, and BodyMind Balancing will greatly assist this process. "Optimum health lies in the connectedness between the heart and brain," said Helen Bolger of the BodyMind Balancing Association. "The BodyMind complex is a series of systems that need clear communication channels between them in order to maintain harmony and health."

Last July my friend Louise and I decided to take on the challenge of completing an Ironman – a 3.8k swim, 180k cycle, 42k run, raced in that order and in one day. I remember doubting whether I would be physically able to complete such a long event. We did some research, talked to some other more experienced triathletes, and picked out a 30 week training plan which we began in November.
