Thu, Aug 18, 2016

An intriguing report appeared in the Galway Express of March 21 1903 which stated: “At Prospect Hill on St Patrick’s Day, two hurling matches were played between the Gaelic League v Queen’s College, and Castlegar v Bohermore. The National Independence Band, The Forster Street Fife and Drum Band and the Industrial School Band, with several thousand people, attended. Did Liverpool scuttle Galway’s Atlantic dream?

Thu, Aug 18, 2016

If Eamon Bradshaw and his crew think their courageous plan to extend Galway harbour into deep water to accommodate cruise liners is a step into modernity that will bring commercial success to the city on a grand scale, it pales almost into insignificance compared to the stunning ambitions the Galway merchants schemed in the mid 19th century.

Setting the bar at The Dáil

Sat, Aug 13, 2016

No, not that Dáil Bar, where politicians run up huge tabs after controversial late-night sittings. The other one, on the corner of Cross Street and Middle Street. Although it has the same name as the bar in Ireland's house of parliament, ('Dáil' translates from Irish as a place where people meet to discuss, debate, and talk), our Dáil is much better craic. Over the years, the building has been a family home, a toy shop, and most recently a licensed premises known as Tí na nÓg. Since 2008, the pub is in common ownership with The Front Door, Tom Sheridans, and Brasserie on The Corner, and as such has a higher standard than most others. It enjoys an ideal location in The Latin Quarter, just around the corner from Quay Street and Galway's tourist and shopping hub.

Top five tips to advertise property online

Thu, Aug 11, 2016

So summer is winding down and the start of September is fast approaching. Students from all over the island of Ireland and even further afield will descend on Galway city and county looking for accommodation for the academic year. The competition for these potential tenants is fierce and landlords hope to have 'no room at the inn'. And with the younger generation so active online these days, how your property is marketed on the net can be the difference in obtaining a tenant within a few days and having an empty room for a couple of months.

The west of Ireland lacks civilisation - But it has poetry

Thu, Aug 11, 2016

‘The capital, Galway, is a terrible place. It has of course St Nicholas, one of the few remaining pre-Reformation churches; the frontispiece of a Renaissance town house erected as a gateway to the public park; and a medieval fortified house about which they tell the well-known story of the Lynch who hanged his own son when the sheriff wasn't available. At least once a year while I was director of the Abbey theatre we got a play on that. From Miss Edgeworth's account of her travels to Galway it would appear that as a theme for tragedy it was popular a hundred years ago. But even before that I had a lively hatred of the town....'

Gardenwise - Plants for Pollinators

Thu, Aug 11, 2016

Early this morning, letting the dog out to, ahem, powder her nose in the garden, a gentle humming reminded me that the day’s work was already under way for bees on the early shift. Closer inspection of a nearby catmint revealed several little furry bodies buzzing harmoniously as they moved methodically from one bloom to the next. This plant – Nepeta “Six Hills Giant” – is a magnet for them and you will often find several bees busy at work on the same plant.

Summer Time.....and the Trimming is Easy

Fri, Aug 05, 2016

We like our hedges in these parts. Maybe it’s because a healthy green hedge is such an attractive backdrop for more colourful garden inhabitants – or maybe it’s the sense of enclosure it gives, the sense that our home is our castle and by enclosing it with a wall of green, it marks out the boundaries of our territory and somehow makes the space more our own. A well chosen and well maintained hedge can certainly do these things, as well as giving us shelter from prying eyes and chilly winds, so it’s no wonder they are a fixed feature in many of our gardens.
