Our evolved brain is more concerned with our safety and obtaining resources than with our happiness. This can lead to a narrowing of our perception. For example, if while shopping you are received well in five shops, but the sales assistant in the sixth shop is unpleasant, what will you remember about your shopping trip later that evening, the five pleasant sales assistants or the unpleasant one?

Rick Hanson, an eminent neuropsychologist, describes how this negativity bias of the brain makes it like Velcro for bad experience and Teflon for good experience. Furthermore this negativity can often be seen in our attitudes of self-criticism, which we believe leads to our improved performance. However a harsh self-critical inner voice can undermine our self-confidence and self-esteem and lead to feelings of guilt and shame that chip away at our mental wellbeing.

Fr Lally’s Street League under 14 champions, 1965

In 1881, Father Lally was made parish priest of Rahoon. At the time the parish was served by two churches, Bushypark and Barna, Dr McEvilly, Bishop of Galway was appointed as Archbishop of Tuam, and Father Lally was made Vicar Capitular of the Diocese in the interregnum until the appointment of a successor to Dr McEvilly. Dr McEvilly was aware that the very large parish of Rahoon had no central church so he gave Fr Lally money to start the process of erecting a new church beside the Presentation Convent. Fr Lally collected the funds and employed direct labour to build the church. The foundation stone of St Joseph’s was laid on April 22, 1882, and the church was consecrated on February 7, 1886.

As artists they shared a carefree Bohemian life between Coole Park, the family’s holiday home at Mount Vernon on Clare’s ‘flaggy shore’, and trips to London and Paris. Robert’s mother, Lady Augusta, loved having her grandchildren living with her. ‘In her safe benevolent care’ they thrived while allowing their parents freedom to roam.
