Thu, Dec 11, 2008

Now to state the obvious, another week over and another week nearer to Christmas. I hope that you have enjoyed some days outdoors, and by that I mean in the garden and not walking up and down the main shopping streets. The shopping can wait but the garden cannot.

No doubt you will get a poinsettia or two for the Christmas, because as I pointed out briefly last week they and other pot plants make great gifts.

Scoil Fhursa, seachtú cúig bliain ag fás

Thu, Dec 11, 2008

The Irish Church Missions was the missionary wing of the United Church of England and Ireland. They were a very rich organisation and at the height of their endeavours, had an income of between £30,000 and £40,000 a year in this country alone. They first came to the west of Ireland, to Clifden, in 1849. Soon after a school was established in Galway, where a child might be given an evening meal and a night’s lodging after his attending a Bible class. They had two houses in Merchants Road, one named ‘The Dover School’.

Look after your feet

Thu, Dec 04, 2008

During a typical day our feet endure a cumulative force of several hundred tons, with the average person, engaging in non-strenuous activity, walking approximately four miles per day or about 115,000 miles in a lifetime. All too often our feet are ignored, or squeezed into ill-fitting shoes in the name of fashion. The result for many people is sensitive or troublesome feet and difficulty in finding footwear to alleviate the problems caused.

Robert Lyons from Green Comfort Medical Footwear will be at Homecare Medical Supplies in Terryland Retail Park on the Headford Road from 10am to 4.30pm today (Thursday) to offer advice on footwear for problem feet.

Fine dining at great prices

Thu, Dec 04, 2008

I heard through the grapevine that Stefan Matz, the executive head chef from Ashford Castle, had taken charge of the kitchen at the g Hotel. Stefan was the person who created the excellent value/quality menu at Cullen’s restaurant in the grounds of Ashford Castle and I wondered if he would bring a similar offering to the g Hotel. He is also responsible for all the kitchens at Ashford Castle and has many serious awards to his credit including the Georgina Campbell chef of the year in 2007. Suffice it to say that the g is now a must visit for all food lovers and indeed for anyone who perhaps looked in those glittering windows and thought “I can’t afford to go in there”. The main covers are priced at €19 to €32 and that includes your vegetables. That, my friends, is very, very, competitive, and an example of what is on offer is black sole with crab meat in a velvet crab sauce for €25, and venison with redcurrant cream and crisp venison mousse for €22. Starters range from €6.50 to €15.50 and include inventive dishes to suit every palate.

Thu, Dec 04, 2008

New Italian restaurant Il Folletto on Quay Street really is little Italy in the heart of Galway. As you walk in the door straight away you are transported to a warm summer’s evening in southern Italy. The traditional rustic appearance and precise attention to detail really is something to behold. Nothing has been left to chance in creating a warm inviting homely Italian welcome. From freshly imported Italian cured meats, cheese, and pastas to full bodied or lightly fruity Italian wines from the extensive wine menu, everything is the real deal. Even the staff are Italian!

Home Ground

Thu, Dec 04, 2008

The easiest type of gardening for this time of year is what I term armchair gardening. Easy work this might be, but vital nonetheless.

Next to my love of gardening is my love of books, and being able to link my hobbies can be very satisfying. Mind you, I enjoy reading many many types of books, not just those inclined to the plant world. I must admit though that during the busy seasons I find myself reading the pictures rather than the texts. I console myself by stating that gardening is a very visual subject and pictures are often more helpful than words.

Galway Rowing Club, one hundred years

Thu, Dec 04, 2008

Competitive rowing had been taking place on the Corrib for many years when the Ancient Order of Hibernians decided to form a new club in 1910. They got local contractor Walter Flaherty (who had already built the Corrib Club) to build a wooden clubhouse on the site of the present Galway Rowing Club. It was tarred each year up to 1970 in order to preserve the wood, and so it became known as ‘the Blackening Box’. In that year also there was a dispute in Saint Patrick’s Rowing Club and a number of oarsmen left and joined the new club.
