St Nicholas’ Garden Fete this Saturday

Thu, Jun 09, 2016

It's that time of year again — the annual St Nicholas' Garden Fete takes place on June 11 from 2pm to 5pm at The Rectory on Taylor’s Hill. Everyone is invited to the fun-filled day, which has become one of the milestone social occasions in Galway life. As in previous years, parking will be available at St Mary’s College. All proceeds will go to maintain Galway's fabulous mediaeval heritage church, St Nicholas', in the heart of the city.

A group of dedicated volunteers has been frantically busy getting the garden party ready — clipping hedges, mowing lawns, tweaking plants, baking all kinds of goodies for the bake stall, and preparing the barbecue. For the children, the bouncing castle is ready, in addition to the toy stall, face painting, ice cream, games, and myriad other activities. You can buy a gorgeous plant on the plant stall or get a bargain at bric-a brac or the silent auction. You might even win a prize in the raffle, at the bottle and bag stall, or by taking a spin on the wheel of fortune.

The woman who threw a hatchet at the prime minister

Thu, Jun 02, 2016

There was hardly a marriage of two minds greater than that between Hanna Sheehy and Francis Skeffington, who were married in Dublin in 1903, and who committed their lives to many causes, particularly feminism, pacifism, socialism, and nationalism. Hanna was one of the founders of the Irish Women’s Franchise League, determined to win votes for women. As part of its disobedience campaign, women were urged not to fill in the 1911 Census form correctly. Her husband Francis, totally supportive in all her endeavours, and as head of the household, submitted the following:

‘Lord, thou art hard on mothers’

Thu, May 26, 2016

Where is more beautiful, Connemara or Kerry?
This question, still argued over today, occupied the Pearse children in happier days before the 1916 Rising. Padraig, who had been coming to the west since 1903, and had built a cottage at Ross Muc, said the only way to finally solve the question, was for his mother Margaret, and his two sisters, the elder, also called Margaret, and the younger girl Mary Brigid, to come to Connemara for a holiday. The two men, Padraig and his inseparable brother Willie, set out in advance to get things ready while the three women followed later.

The ‘New’ Cemetery

The Imperial Hotel — standing the test of time

Thu, May 26, 2016

Located in the heart of Galway city, the Imperial Hotel certainly has an impressive location. It is in close proximity to the bus and railway station, which are both just just a short stroll away. There is a taxi rank right outside, and all the main bus routes leave from Eyre Square. Flanked on all sides by high profile shops, restaurants, and bars, it is at the centre of a hive of activity.

Inside, this 85 bed modern city centre hotel exudes a friendly atmosphere. Plenty of seating allows guests to relax wherever they are. The residents' lounge is an informal, cosy, retreat open till late, and the outdoor patio is perfect for sunny days. Plush purple and green are the dominant colors in the otherwise dark, cosy, dining space. Muted olive and brown seating contrast with the brightly patterned carpet, set against the stonework walls of the traditional bar grill, and it has long been known locally as the meeting place of Galway. Customers settle to watch live sports or meet friends for a coffee and scone. It is very child friendly (and buggy accessible), the children's menu has a main course, dessert, and drink priced at €9.50 for the under 12s. They serve good quality affordable food all day, every day, and care is taken to ensure customers feel right at home.
