The Maldron Hotel on Sandy Road is a modern building on the the fringes of the city, a landmark with its glazed exterior and its location opposite The Menlo Park Hotel in an area not lacking in hotels. The glass front points you towards the Headford Road, and inside, the high-vaulted reception space combines international airport chic and modern design which has been nicely updated since opening over a decade ago. Set back from the busy road that encircles the city, it also has the advantage of being just minutes from the centre of town with free underground parking. Scents of an Ending

Tue, Oct 08, 2019

If asked to name some autumn scented plants could you do it? It might be trickier than you think, as the scents we associate with autumn usually tend towards the woodsmoke / damp leaves / spiced pumpkin variety, no? Balls Bridge, 1685

Thu, Oct 03, 2019

This drawing is of a detail from “A Prospect of Galway” drawn by Thomas Phillips in 1685. It shows the southern end of the middle suburb with Balls Bridge on the left, and the bit of an arch you can see on the far right was part of the West Bridge. Balls Bridge is the bridge over what is now the canal between Upper and Lower Dominick Street, and the buildings we are looking at would be the backs of Lower Dominick Street as seen roughly from across the road from where the Fisheries Tower is today. The West Bridge is where O’Brien’s Bridge is today.
