The Salthill Social — a great restaurant and more

Thu, Dec 21, 2017

Remember when The Spanish Arch was a car park and there was nothing much on Middle Street except the Augi; back when BT was Moons and Nora Barnacle's house was just another house; before Westside was called Westside and there was nothing Latin about the Latin Quarter — that was when Salthill was the undisputed centre of all nightlife in the west of Ireland. While those days are long gone, Salthill seems to be reinventing itself once more.

Are you tired of being tired all the time?

Thu, Dec 21, 2017

We have natural sleeping and waking patterns, knows as circadian rhythms, which refer to fluctuations in body temperature, hormone levels, energy levels, and sleep. These occur over a 24-hour period, driven by the brain’s biological ‘clock’. Thu, Dec 21, 2017

Loving yourself requires a long-term commitment to the triumvirate of health – proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. When you really want to treat yourself, you may even invest in the occasional pampering or luxury experience to reward yourself and recharge.

‘You may snore if you please’ (Per me vel stertas licet)

Thu, Dec 21, 2017

Hands up those of us who did Latin in school?.....three? five? ..OK 12 of us. I know Latin is still sold to some young students as the key to understanding European culture and heritage. Old school masters argue that Latin is better for you than Sudoku, better, even, that The Irish Times Crosaire crossword. Yet when I came across my old Kennedy’s Revised Latin Primer, I was filled with an old familiar dread. There it all was, the boring conjunctions of verbs, and the declensions of nouns; all the miserable rules of grammar and syntax, possibly the driest book ever created, and not a joke between its covers.

A taste of Italy with a Galway accent

Thu, Dec 14, 2017

Eglinton Street has many long serving restaurants to choose from, such as Maxwells and the Cellar Bar. Newer, more exotic, places such as Tomodachi Sushi Bar have lately increased the wealth of choice in the area. Zappi's, set in the sizable building that you may remember as Decobakes, is the newest of these dining options. Gone are the overpriced fondant icing and cupcake wrappers, in their place neat, red, banquette seating and blonde wood tables topped with terracotta pots of basil. This casual diner serves a wide range of traditional dishes, specialising in pizza, pasta, gelato, and classic Italian wines. Zappi's is a pleasant surprise and you get much more than you expect, many of the staff are Italian, further adding to the authentic vibe.
