Understanding arthritis

Did you know that there are more than 100 types of arthritis? Arthritic conditions range from extremely rare to run of the mill.

In Ireland the three most prevalent arthritic conditions are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is often described as “wear and tear”. OA develops at various rates with some people experiencing gradual symptoms developing over a long period of time (years to decades ) with very limited bother. Other people unfortunately notice a rapid progression of symptoms while experiencing excruciating pain. Factors of progression include activity level, injury, obesity, and genetics.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition which commonly causes damage to numerous joints. With RA, the immune system attacks the cells of the body and causes the lining of the joints to swell. This type of arthritis can affect other parts of the body such as nerves, skin, eyes, and lungs.

Psoriatic arthritis is a condition triggered by or associated with psoriasis. It is a chronic disorder characterised by patches of red and white skin inflammation accompanied by scaling. It generally affects the scalp, the navel, or the private areas. The psoriasis can trigger a reaction leading to widespread joint inflammation.

It is important to understand the difference between each of these conditions and to ensure they are diagnosed and treated appropriately. If you have been suffering from any form of arthritis, visit City Chiropractic and see how the team can help you effectively manage your condition.
