Ten laws of health and fitness, part one

Wed, Jul 29, 2020

There are two things that I really like, one is quotes and the second is lists. Top five or top 10 lists resonate with me as they help break any problem or challenge down into manageable, achievable, steps. Health and fitness is no different. It can be broken down into a manageable, achievable, steps and should not be some mystery that only the chosen few get to experience. That is why I want to present the 10 laws of health and fitness in this article. There are certain irrefutable laws or facts that need to be adhered to in order to attain a great level of health and fitness. Going to market

Thu, Jul 23, 2020

“Every Saturday morning a procession of donkey-carts set out, nose to tail, for the market in Galway. This took place in the triangular patch by the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas. It dates from 1320 and was dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, who was chosen then as the patron saint of Galway. There the donkeys were unharnessed and tethered to a wheel, the shafts were let down to the ground and the goods to be sold were displayed on the sloping cart. Vendors came from many more prosperous areas and their wares were a source of envy to those who lived in the congested strip along the coast. Eggs in big wicker baskets with hinged lids, ducks, hens and chickens, wooden kegs of buttermilk, home churned butter laid in rolls on cabbage-leaves, cabbages, onions, sometimes geese, hand-knitted socks – all sold briskly throughout the morning to the people of the town.

A time when grass grew on Galway streets

Thu, Jul 23, 2020

It is generally agreed that the treaty signed between the Williamite general de Ginkel, and the Irish/Jacobian Patrick Sarsfield, on October 9 1691 in Limerick, was a very satisfactory military outcome for both sides, but not a satisfactory outcome for Catholic Ireland who, with the loss of her armies, was left at the mercy of a vengeful Protestant parliament.

Seven training mistakes to avoid

Thu, Jul 23, 2020

1. No fitness plan means no hope
Most people love a plan. A lot don’t. Sometimes in life, though, you have to accept that without a roadmap you will get lost and this is especially true of getting fit. If you have a workout plan, a purpose or specific aim, then you have a template to success. If you follow it, the chances are you will achieve your goal. If you don’t, you won’t, and although it sounds nice to just pop into the gym and make it up as you go along, that strategy just doesn’t produce results. A plan will help you track your progress, challenge your workouts, and help you develop and progress. Think of it like shopping. If you head out to shop aimlessly you will probably just browse aimlessly for hours. But if you head out with a list, you will use your time effectively and only get the things on the list, which will leave you plenty of time to head to the gym afterwards.

Top energy tips from Evergreen

Thu, Jul 23, 2020

Rise and shine
We should ideally wake in the morning feeling well rested after a good quality sleep. It is important to start your day by refuelling your body – it likely has been up to 12 hours since your last square meal. Porridge is an old reliable, but oats don’t agree with everyone; consider an alternate grain such as Evergreen millet flakes, or have pre-made energy balls if you find yourself in a rush most mornings. Linwood’s offers a range of milled goodness that can be added to anything at breakfast time. Grabbing that hot cup of coffee is very tempting, maybe consider swapping this out for a cup of Koyu matcha tea, which provides a caffeine boost but alongside multiple other health benefits and is excellent at promoting focus.

Sounds of the Sea Part II – Plants for a Coastal Garden

Wed, Jul 22, 2020

Last week we looked at some of the garden design issues facing those lucky enough to have a garden close to the coast. This week I’d like to share with you some of my favourite plants for growing in these challenging locations. The great benefit to living and gardening close to the sea is that frost is very rare, so you will get away with a wider variety of tender plants without winter protection than you would further inland. The downside, of course, is that strong, salty winds will be almost constant unless your garden is very sheltered, so plants need to be chosen with this in mind.
