What to wear now: trans-seasonal looks

Thu, Aug 09, 2012

It is always exciting to see the new collections arriving in the shops, especially when they boast interesting and exquisite trends and silhouettes. What better time than now to update your wardrobe with some key pieces that you can wear now and which will see you through the autumn and winter.

Opulent patterns abound in the autumn collections, with none more fabulous than the romantic 19th century-inspired brocade luxurious fabrics. Work this look into your wardrobe with this River Island skirt with brocade crafted floral detail. This elegant tulip skirt is one of my favourite ways to work the trend. Style this sophisticated piece with a simple colour T-shirt tucked in, and in the autumn pair it with cream blouse, leather biker jacket, and ornate drop earrings for unrivalled glamour. A light knitted jumper is equally edgy and stylish for that look.

Quality and value at Rouge

Thu, Aug 09, 2012

Open over a year now and a firm favourite with many a Galwegian, Rouge is the hottest ticket in town at the moment, and understandably so. The €15 for two courses price tag alone would be enough to get people in the door, but the fact that the food is fantastic has something to do with it as well. A small menu is usually a promise of good things to come in my eyes, a few things done right is far better than a long list of potential disappointments and Rouge has the shortest and sweetest menu of them all. I went at the weekend with some old ex-Galway friends (who must now regret leaving!) and we had a very lovely evening there.

Le Petit Rouge opens in ‘the dining district’

Thu, Aug 09, 2012

Le Petit Rouge, directly across the street from its ‘maman’ restaurant Rouge, has just opened, bringing yet another option to the West End's thriving 'dining district'. This is a more than welcome addition, as currently there are few places for the thirsty and peckish to go. This style and standard of wine, cheese, and charcuterie is really only available upstairs at Sheridan’s Cheesemongers, since Sheridan’s on the Docks was so cruelly taken from us before its time.

The cathedral in the square

Thu, Aug 09, 2012

“Galway, the Capital of Connacht, historic metropolis of the Tribes and one of the principal cities of Ireland, looks sad, lonely, sorrowful and dejected without a cathedral, a cathedral towering over, and proudly commanding by its majestic presence the city and its surroundings. Our beautiful plaza, the Square, and I don’t mean the Green with its shoddy rusty time-worn railings — stands as it were, already prepared — God’s Holy Acre long waiting for the Cathedral of the rising resurgent west. The railings would of course be removed making the Green a spacious foreground, and incidentally a delightful parking space, an area almost as large as the Square itself. No spot on earth is good enough for God’s House and “the place where His glory dwelleth”. The Square is the best Galway can give”.

It’s a long way from Sickeen to Sicily

Thu, Aug 02, 2012

About 1,600 miles as the crow flies. A young Galwegian found himself there in the stinking heat of July 1943. He would swap the Dyke Road for the Sunken Road, or the Sandy River for the Simeto River. For sure he would rather have been somewhere else, kicking ball in the Plots, up the Dyke Road, or swimming down at the Waterside, maybe even venturing to Cooper’s Cave... turning up in St Brendan’s with no homework done was a walk in the park compared to this.
