THREE EXCITING local acts take to the stage tonight for Citóg at the Cellar. My Fellow Sponges are a diverse group from Galway with a taste for theatrics. This multi-talented group deliver an electric live show using instruments such as the banjo, glockenspiel, double bass, trumpet, and piano. Influences include diverse artists such as Kate Bush, Luke Kelly, Poncho Sanchez, Devendra Banhart, Steve Reich, Joanna Newsom, and Bootsy Collins.

Poetry workshops with Kevin Higgins in September

ASPIRING GALWAYpoets can have their work appraised by well-known poet Kevin Higgins at a series of workshops at the Galway Arts Centre in September.

Kevin has enjoyed huge success since his first collection, The Boy With No Face, was shortlisted for the 2006 Strong Award for Best First Collection by an Irish Poet. He has since released two more poetry collections, Time Gentlemen, Please and Frightening New Furniture, and his book of essays and reviews Mentioning The War was published earlier this year. Kevin’s next collection of poems, The Ghost in The Lobby, will be published by Salmon Poetry next year.

This new musical comedy is based around the music of Elvis. It is 1955 and Chad, a handsome, hip-swivelling, guitar-struming, roustabout, is fresh out of jail. Looking for somewhere to fix his motorbike, he lands in a small town where he causes all the girls palpatations. The mechanic, Natalie, can fix his bike, but can she overhaul his heart?

THE FOUR winners of a pair of tickets to the screening of British gangster classic Snatch as part of the Jameson Cult Film Club are as follows: Joanne Whelan from Ardrahan, Gary Shiels from Knocknacarra, Evelyn Kenny from Dangan Heights, and Danny McTiernan from Athenry.

It will be the first time the Jameson Cult Film Club comes to Galway. These free screenings are held in mysterious locations that are designed to transport you right into the world of the film. The screening of Guy Ritchie’s 2000 cult classic, starring Benicio Del Toro, Brad Pitt, and Vinnie Jones, takes place at a secret location on August 23.
