A YOUNG novice nun gives birth to a baby that is later found strangled. Yet the nun, Sr Agnes cannot remember either the conception or pregnancy.

A court psychiatrist Dr Livingstone, a chain-smoking lapsed Catholic, is dispatched to the convent to discover whether the nun is fit to stand trial. Livingstone believes the answer lies in Agnes’s subconscious, while the otherwise worldly Mother Superior believes a miracle might have taken place.
