Galway Arts Centre poetry workshops

THE GALWAY Arts Centre will host poetry workshops in May, facilitated by the acclaimed Galway poet Kevin Higgins.

Each workshop will run for eight weeks and will take place on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm (first class May 3); on Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm (from May 5), and on Fridays from 2pm to 3.30pm (starting May 6).

TIME WAS that British poetry was the preserve dusty old English professors and eccentric maiden aunts, with the occasional hippy chick in floral dress or angry young man in black French polo neck thrown in.

Neil Astley set about trying to change that when he began publishing poetry books in the northeast of England in 1978. His success has been spectacular. By presenting poetry in an imaginative way Bloodaxe has helped rescue it from the fringe elements who thought they owned it.

THE DANCES of Asia, South America, and Europe will be performed at the second International Dance Festival Galway next month.

The festival, which was launched this week at NUI, Galway, will take place in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday May 14 at 7.30pm. It has been organised by NUIG staff and the Sisters of La Retraite and it will raise funds for Special Olympics Ireland Connacht.
