This will make the ladies scream

THE RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will be joined by brilliant German pianist Bernd Glemser for Haydn’s ‘Surprise Symphony’ - of which the composer said, “This will make the ladies scream” - on its 2009 Spring tour.

Haydn’s comment is also the title of this show, which will also feature Liszt’s dazzling Piano Concerto No1 in E Flat Major and Brahms’ Symphony No 4 on Tuesday March 24 at 8pm in Leisureland.

Since he won the ARD Competition, Bernd Glemser has been in the first flight of the world’s pianists. A pupil of the Russian pianist and teacher Vitaliy Margulis, Bernd soon found himself in the critical limelight after the remarkable feat of carrying off first and special prizes in no fewer than 17 international competitions from 1981 onwards.

His honours include the Cortot Competition, the Rubinstein, the Tchaikovsky, Busoni, and Callas, among other major contests, with critically acclaimed appearances in important musical centres throughout the world.

In 1989 Bernd had the unique honour to be appointed Germany’s youngest professor by the Saarbrücken College of Music and the department of education there was obliged to remove him from the student register because of his new professorship, but by way of consolation he was offered the opportunity to take his outstanding exams within the following two years.

His status is now such that he receives regular invitations to give concerts all over Europe, as well as in the USA, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, China, South America, and Australia.

Tickets are €22/18/10. They are available from Opus II, St Augustine Street or from Music For Galway on 091 - 705962. The next concert is on April 20 with ConTempo and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet in the Meyrick Hotel.
