Choose the Dominican Republic for your holiday this year

In association with Corrib Travel

With Summer on the horizon many of us will be looking towards a chance for a get away. Living in Galway, one of the main reasons we want to jump on a plane and fly away is because of the lack of sun. The Canaries, the Balearic Islands, France, and the USA are all destinations we flock to when heading abroad. But have you ever thought about the Dominican Republic (DR )?

The beautiful Caribbean island is perfect for a romantic getaway or a family holiday. The beaches, watersports, culture, and history of the Dominican Republic will have you wondering why it has taken you so long to visit.

1 Temperature

Far from the wild, windy, wet, weather of Galway, the lowest temperature in the Dominican Republic is in January; a 'bone chilling' 25 degrees Celsius. So if you are looking for heat and sun, the DR has that covered.

2 Whale watching

Head to Samana Bay where you can watch 3,000 to 5,000 humpback whales in their natural calving and mating grounds on a guided boat tour or from the land at the observatory in Punta Balandra. Hear the male humpback's courting song and experience the brilliant displays of flippering and tail lobbing. An opportunity that is too good to miss.

3 The Beaches

The Dominican Republic has some of the best beaches in the world. Punta Cana; the land of rest and relaxation; is one of the most visited parts of the island due to its top class resorts. Most of the resorts cater to families and have developed miniature entertainment parks for children. You can also have your dream wedding here, with brilliant photo opportunities against a backdrop of silky-fine white sand and beaches with coconut palms.

4 Golf

If hitting a few golf balls is your thing, then the DR is perfect for you. With more than 30 courses on the island, golf enthusiasts have plenty of options from which to choose.

5 Excursions

The DR has lots to explore. Highlights include the capital Santo Domingo, the New World’s oldest colonial city, and adventurous activities such as white-water rafting in the island’s mountainous centre.

So these are a few reasons why you should visit the Dominican Republic. What are you waiting for?
