McEvilly claims European Masters title

Martin McEvilly, the evergreen GCH stalwart, became European champion yet again at the European Masters championships in Turkey recently.

McEvilly won the over 65 gold in the 2000m steeplechase with a time of 7.49, while Tommy Farragher of Corofin AC also medalled at the same event, taking a fine bronze in the pentathlon event.

At the Northern Ireland Masters athletics championship on Saturday in Belfast, Mary Barrett of Loughrea AC won an amazing six medals in the over 55 category. Her victories came in the shot putt (10.38m ), discus (24.98m ), 80m hurdles (15.09 ), long jump (3.71m ), high jump (1.30m ) and a silver in the javelin, throwing 21.78m.

Bob Bailey of Loughrea AC took home five medals, with golds in the long jump (4.75m ), triple jump (9.30m ) and high jump (1.40m ), silver in the 110m hurdles and bronze in the discus.

Peggy Higgins of Corofin AC also won a superb haul of six golds at over 60 level, with wins in the long jump with 3.11m, as well as in high jump, triple jump, hammer, discus and shot putt.

The Clonbur half marathon, with a field of more than 50 athletes, was won by Clare athlete Julio Cesar Castro of Kilmurray Ibrickane AC in a time of 1hr 14 mins. Antoine Maerten was second in 1hr 19mins, while the first woman home was Irene Gorman, the Barna native now competing with Crusaders AC in Dublin who ran an excellent 1 hour 25 mins in her first half marathon.
