Lord Mayor highlights the West’s strong influence on Dublin

The west continues to have a strong influence on Dublin, according its Lord Mayor and Spiddal native Naoise Ó Muirí who addressed councillors at this month’s county council meeting, which was held in Oughterard on Monday.

Before the meeting officially got underway, the Lord Mayor told the gathered councillors that while “there are many real challenges ahead for” Dublin “there were many opportunities for us to make progress together”.

The Lord Mayor, who represents the Clontarf ward of Dublin, was accompanied by his mother and farther at the meeting which took place at Oughterard Golf Club - in acknowledgment of county Mayor Tom Welby’s term drawing to a close.

In his speech, the Lord Mayor spoke of his school days at Colaiste Chroi Mhuire where he had attended a function earlier that day and was presented with a model of a Galway hooker. He further acknowledged the school’s 40th anniversary, thanking the principal and staff for their dedicated work, and wished them all the best for the next 40 years.

Confirming his Galway ties, Naoise Ó Muirí told councillors that although he has been in Dublin since 1994 his “west of Ireland credentials are still very much intact”. He then added: “The ties between the Mansion House and the west are very strong this year.”

The Lord Mayor concluded his speech by extending an invitation to the councillors to the Mansion House on Sunday, June 16.
