Find out how to bounce back from debt at free seminar next week

A free seminar, to be held in the city on Thursday evening next, will give people the tools to bounce back from debt.

The event, which is being organised by the social enterprise organisation New Beginning which supports people in financial crisis, will take place at the Clayton Hotel, Ballybrit from 7pm to 9pm.

It is being held in response to the growing number of calls for help from local people battling with debt or coping with less money.

It will provide advice on dealing with debt as well as guarding your mental health and ensuring your children are given the best start in life.

New Beginning says people are breaking down in tears when they come to their offices for help.

Ruth Fanning of New Beginning, says people are people their homes and businesses and can feel like there is no way out.

“We have thousands of people at their wits’ end coming to us for help. Some are at a very low ebb. Each week at least a 100 or more individuals contact us as they can’t deal with the burden alone.

“People across the country are waking each morning with a sense of foreboding as the bills pile up, businesses close and even homes are under threat. Everyone is feeling the strain. No matter how desperately hopeless a person’s financial situation may seem, there are realistic solutions for all situations. We underestimate our own ability to cope through difficult times.”

The two-hour session will include practical steps for dealing with the burden of debt from New Beginning and advice on how to harness hope during challenging times with psychologist Shane Martin.

He says people losing their homes and businesses may feel like there is no way out. “This could not be further from the truth. Despite the challenges from outside, we as humans are very resilient creatures. We underestimate our own ability to cope through difficult times. We may be unable to control external events, but we own our own minds and can tap into our inner resources.

“Through these stormy economic times we need to do much more than just take shelter or weather the storm. We need to work at becoming mentally stronger and apply strategies scientifically proven to help us deal with life’s challenges.”

He points out that challenges and change are a fundamental part of human existence.“It is crucial that those under ongoing financial pressure are skilled in strategies that will empower and protect them through these challenging times.”
