Improving Galway WFC host title chasing Peamount

Stephen Lally's side defeated Athlone Town on Tuesday

Stephen Lally’s Galway WFC host Peamount United in what promises to be an interesting WNL encounter at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday (4pm ).

It has been a hugely encouraging week for Galway, who followed a gutsy display against Shelbourne by beating Athlone Town at Lissywoollen on Tuesday evening.

Ultimately an enjoyable encounter was decided by a splendid late header from Anna Fahey, who notched her first senior goal for Galway.

That teenagers Hannah Walsh, Therese Kinnevey, Shauna Brennan, Nicole McNamara, and Fahey all contributed added to the sense of satisfaction.

The return of Emma Starr is a significant boost with Meabh De Burca, Julie Ann Russell, and Becky Walsh all making a positive impact too.

Lally was thrilled Galway’s perseverance was rewarded in the midlands. “I spoke to the girls afterwards and I said to them that they proved to me that they can battle,” Lally says.

“They wanted it, they still continued on. In fairness to Anna Fahey she is a goalscorer - what a header. We want her on the pitch, she is another good girl with great potential. She came earlier than expected, but what a finish from her, what a winner.

“We have been working on set pieces in training. It is great when something comes off like that. We fully deserved it, to get the three points.

“Nothing is handed easy in any match in this league as Athlone have proved in all of their last three games. It was a really important three points to get. It sets us in the middle of the table and we are excited about playing Peamount on Saturday.”

An accomplished Peamount outfit will provide a stern test, but Lally is adamant Galway are developing nicely. “Before the game against Shelbourne I said to the girls I'm delighted July is over,” Lally says about the transfer window closing.

“This is our squad, this is what we will work with. We are getting there - Chloe Singleton is back, Kate Slevin will be training on Thursday, she will be back in the squad. Emma Starr coming into the team, the U19s are getting more confidence.”
