Last home fixture of the season for Galway WFC

Stephen Lally's team host Athlone Town on Friday

Galway WFC's final home game of the WNL season takes place against Athlone Town at Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow (7.45pm ).

It has been an eventful campaign for Stephen Lally's outfit, who reached the semi-final stages of the FAI Cup.

That culminated in a narrow defeat to Shelbourne and it was a similar story again at Tolka Park on Saturday when Galway WFC were beaten in the league.

There has been a significant improvement in Galway WFC's performances in recent months which bodes well for the future.

"We are trying to finish as best as we can," Lally says. "Even in last weekend's game against Shels, I know we were beaten 2-0, but I thought we put in a good performance. If we had taken our chances we could have got something from the game, even when we were down a few bodies.

"Now we have Julie-Ann Russell back from suspension so we will be looking to get a result."

With so many Republic of Ireland underage internationals featuring for the club, hope is attached to Galway WFC with important work being carried out on and off the field of play.

The mix of emerging and established players has blended nicely with the experience of Becky Walsh, Meabh De Burca, Emma Starr and Julie Ann Russell a key factor in Galway WFC's approach.

Savannah McCarthy's enduring excellence for Galway WFC has been rewarded with a most deserved return to the senior international team.

Therese Kinnevey, Shauna Brennan, Kate Slevin, and Nicole McNamara were involved with Dave Connell's Republic of Ireland U19 squad in last month's UEFA European Championship qualifiers in Limerick.

Athlone Town, though, continue to make strides under Tommy Hewitt winning at the Corribside venue in an action packed encounter in May. In August a late Anna Fahey goal from a splendid header earned Galway WFC the points at Lissywollen in an equally hard fought match.

"I said it to the girls when I started, my first game was an eye opener against Peamount," Lally adds.

"I said we would be better the next time we played them up there and we are playing them again on Saturday week in Dublin. I would like to think that we have come a long way since my first game against them."
