A new school building for Scoil Catriona in Renmore needs to be made into "a high priority" for the new Government, as the current school building is no longer "fit for purpose".
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor, Alan Cheevers, who is calling for a meeting with the new Minister of Education, Norma Foley, to seek support for fast tracking a new school building for Scoil Catriona.
According to Cllr Cheevers, the school board has had to "apply yet again" for more emergency funding in the region of €140,000, and which will be "needed urgently" if the school is to re-open in time for September.
"The building was designed in the 1970s," he said. "The electricity system keeps tripping when teachers switch on heaters in winter, the people have to wear coats to keep warm. This school has a great reputation for its great teaching practices and both teachers and the students deserve better."
The school was approved for a new building in 2008 but progress stalled in the wake of the economic collapse.
