The Galway City Council has been accused of having "failed local Travellers by not providing the proper provision of housing," by Social Democrats Galway City East councillor Owen Hanley.
Cllr Hanley was speaking after the protests, hosted by Galway Traveller Movement, which were held outside City Hall on Monday. He alleged that the local authority had not applied for money from the specific Traveller accommodation fund.
"The housing emergency affects everyone but some with more acute issues," he said. "Everyone deserves shelter and good health and we just aren't providing it for members of the Travelling community. We have moral and legal obligations and we must reject anybody having to live in these situations. What world do we live in where Galway is turning away much needed funds?"
