Connolly welcomes commitment to refurbish Mutton Island lighthouse

'Mutton Island is an integral part of Galway's maritime history and heritage' says councillor

A commitment to refurbish the lighthouse on Mutton Island, made this week, by the city manager Brendan McGrath, has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Galway City West councillor, John Connolly.

During the summer, the lighthouse suffered extensive damage from vandalism. Parts of the roof were taken off, windows and doors were broken, and the internal part of the building was also damaged. Following this, Cllr Connolly requested that part of the heritage budget be used to restore the building.

"Mutton Island is an integral part of Galway's maritime history and heritage," said Cllr Connolly. "It is one of the most popular visitor attractions during Heritage Weeks. The damage done recently prevents the opportunity for people to visit the lighthouse, and should this practice cease, I fear it will be lost forever."

Cllr Connolly is also calling on the council to enhance security around Mutton Island to ensure such vandalism is prevented in the future.
