Bats, biodiversity and business dominate Monday’s oral hearing

The importance of biodiversity, business, and bats dominated the opening of the second week of the An Bord Pleanala oral hearing into the proposed Galway City Ring Road (GCRR), held at the g Hotel.
The hearing is scheduled to run until mid-April, and matters were expedited considerably on Monday when many of the listed speakers failed to turn up, leading to a hasty rescheduling of those who addressed the event.

Owen Ward, an Irish Traveller and a professional master of education student at NUI Galway, has been elected by postgraduate students onto the university’s Údarás na hOllscoile — the university’s governing body. This is the first time that an Irish Traveller has been elected onto a university governing body in Ireland.

The development company is a joint venture between Galway-based Edward Capital and London-based Summix Capital. The neighbourhood, deriving its name from an historic name for the area is to be known as Augustine Hill, and will deliver 376 homes in an exciting mixed-use expansion of the city centre.
