Having celebrated the centenary of the first ever trans-Atlantic flight last year, Clifden will tomorrow (Friday) welcome back the pioneering pilots behind that feat, Alcock and Brown. And this time it’s forever.

It’s almost 101 years – June 14, 1919 – since those two brave English men took off from Newfoundland in their modified Vickers Vimy bomber. They braved cloud, snow, ice and a near-fatal stall over the Atlantic before finally landing at the Marconi Station at Clifden, County Galway. Their achievement changed the world forever.

Comer Group say material contravention needed for 'exceptional' Corrib Great Southern site development

The owners of the Corrib Great Southern site are currently waiting on the finalisation of development plans ahead of its planning permission submission to Galway City Council. In a statement to the Galway Advertiser issued at dawn today, they said that they hope to develop residential units and some retail units, but that this will require a Material Contravention that will have to be passed by councillors.

Tomi lost 35 members of his family during the Holocaust but never lost his ability to show empathy to others. Anne Frank was a fellow prisoner in Bergen Belsen but sadly she didn’t survive.

County councillor lashes TII over road delays caused by flooding

Call for horse exclusion zone after welfare concerns

Independent councillor James Charity has called for the implementation of a ‘horse exclusion zone’ in part of the Carrowbrowne area to protect the welfare of animals abandoned in flood waters over the weekend.

The call comes after three consecutive days of efforts to save and feed stranded horses in the area, following the Clare River breaching its banks and efforts involving fire services, council wardens, local volunteers, and Cllr Charity himself.
