Two charged following separate drugs seizures

Two people are due to appear in court in Galway next month to answer charges under the Misuse of Drugs Acts following two separate seizures in the city in recent days.

In the first incident, two men and a woman were arrested following the discovery of cannabis worth an estimated €12,000 in a car in the Briarhill area on Thursday September 15. The woman and one of the men were later released without charge, and file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions on the incident. The second man has been charged under sections 3 and 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act and is due to appear in Galway District Court next month.

Councillor slams HSE for not spending €200,000 to keep nursing home open

A city councillor has hit out at the HSE West for what she terms its refusal to spend €200,000 on the refurbishment works necessary to keep St Francis Nursing Home in Upper Newcastle open.

Cllr Catherine Connolly, a member of the health authority’s regional health forum, slammed the HSE for justifying the closure of the 33-year-old public home for “such a miserly sum”.
