To describe An Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s cabinet reshuffle as cautious would be to give it a gravitas it does not deserve. It was simply the work of an uninspired and dreadfully uninspiring leader.

The nature of Cowen’s reshuffle was best symbolised by the calamitous Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, who publicly stated that Albert Einstein proposed the Theory of Evolution, being appointed Minister for Education and Science.

Residents in the Gort na Greine, Cruachan Park, and Ros Geal estates are appealing to An Bord Pleanála to refuse permission to a proposed commercial development in Millar’s Lane, which has already received the backing of the Galway City Council.

The city council granted planning permission for a commercial development adjacent to Millar’s Lane. The application was originally submitted in 2008 which sought to demolish the existing dwelling house and shed and create a new site entrance onto Rahoon Road.

Collingwood Football Club, the most popular professional sports team in Australia, has come to the aid of Galway’s fledgling Aussie Rules Team, the Midwest Magpies.

The Magpies have only been in existence a short while and had not as yet been able to secure a playing kit for their inaugural season in the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland, but the famous Melbourne club has stepped in and is providing a set of jerseys used by its first team last year. The club is also sending some footballs to help get the game off the ground in Galway.

A Salthill man who died suddenly in the United States was remembered this week with fondness as the “life and soul” of the bar in which he worked in Boston.

Kevin Armitage of Dr Mannix Road emigrated to the United States when he was 19 and worked in numerous pubs over the years. He was found dead at his home at the weekend. His ashes will be spread at Black Rock, Salthill at 3.30 this Saturday.
