Forward planning to make coastal risks a thing of the past

Better coastal planning is required in Mayo in order to protect some of the county’s most attractive beaches and coastline areas which are under threat from coastal erosion, particularly in Clew Bay and along the Mullet Peninsula.

The issue is set to be discussed at a national coastal planning seminar to be held at NUI Galway later this month, at which a range of new scientific resources developed to facilitate better coastal planning as part of a €1.9 million three-year EU project, are to be launched. The Europe-wide project assessed the extent to which coastal risks are currently considered in development plans and noted that, across Europe’s Atlantic countries, despite guidance from policy documents at national and European level to include considerations of coastal risks, existing development plans are lacking in this area.

Up to three thousand expected to march in Mayo Save Our Schools campaign

Up to 3,000 representatives from small schools across Mayo are expected to march to the Castlebar constituency office of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny on February 25 next, where they will hand deliver a letter of petition calling for the reversal of retrospective Budget cuts to education, in particular those affecting small schools.

The move comes in the wake of Budget cuts announced in December, which increased the pupil teacher ratio retrospectively.

Closure order served on Ballyhaunis bistro

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland reported that four Closure Orders were served on food businesses during the month of January for breaches in food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010. One of these Enforcement Orders was served on Knox Street Bistro, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis, Mayo.

Prices for renting houses in Mayo showed another decline in the fourth quarter of 2011 according to the latest Daft Rental Report. The report states that the average rent in the Mayo region in the last quarter was €564, a year on change of a 2.6 per cent reduction.

Mayo RNLI lifeboats launched twenty five times in 2011; seventeen people assisted

Last year saw RNLI lifeboats in Ireland launch 980 times to a variety of callouts. More than 900 people were rescued over the course of the year by volunteer lifeboat crews who spent 9,826 hours on service at sea. In Mayo, the RNLI in Achill launched 14 times during 2011 and assisted eight people. In Ballyglass, six all weather lifeboats were launched, five inshore, and a total of nine people were assisted.
