Fri, Feb 10, 2012
Ballina Arts Centre visual art programme continues to provide exhibition opportunities for locally based artists in February with Pareidolia, the debut solo show by Ballina-based painter and photographer Caroline Casey. Pareidolia is seeing what appears to the individual to be a representation of a face, figure, or form in clouds, woodgrain, marble, smoke, shadows, or any non-homogeneous area. It can also be an auditory phenomenon.
Casey’s practice takes in painting, photography and sculpture. Much of her work explores the effect of ‘subconscious interpretation’ of abstracted imagery – whether painted or otherwise. She explains: “I was taking photos of ‘faces’ in clouds and trees before I knew there was a name for it. And I find I do the same with my abstract paintings. Different forms appear in the texture of the paint and pastel. It’s fun to elaborate them into a more recognisable form.” She has previously exhibited in the group shows Perspectives: Ballina Open Exhibition (Ballina Arts Centre) and the Mayo Artists Show (the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar). Pareidolia runs until February 25. Admission is free and all are welcome.
