Mayo General A&E under threat due to staff shortages

Mayo General Hospital is short 12 junior doctors out of 80 posts, a situation which could lead to the axing of services in the future, most notably in the A&E department. The shortages are in the areas of emergency and medicine.

Durcan walks out of town council meeting over lack of prayer

Independent Castlebar town councillor Frank Durcan walked out at the start of a special meeting of the local authority after no prayer was said out loud this week. Only a matter of weeks ago at the May monthly meeting of the local authority, the members voted on a number of protocol issues for the council, one of those included the saying of a prayer before the meeting. At the May meeting the saying of either a Hail Mary or Our Father along with a Glory Be to the Father was passed by four votes to three in the chamber and the protocol arrangements were then passed fully at the ordinary June monthly meeting of the council.

Drink driving case adjourned to arrange evidence from doctor

A drink driving case against a Claremorris man was adjourned for mention to the July sitting of Claremorris District Court so that it can be arranged that the doctor who took the blood sample from the man will give evidence in court. Michael Sweeney, 5 Bog Road, Ballinrobe, was in court to face a charge of drink driving after he was stopped on the old Ballindine Road, Claremorris, at 3.40am on September 3 last year.

Man with no insurance ordered to pay €100 to Garda benevolent fund

A Ballyhaunis man who was involved in a minor accident in a supermarket car park while driving without insurance or a licence was given the benefit of the Probation Act and ordered to pay €100 to the Garda benevolent fund in Claremorris District Court.

Three year driving ban for man who made ‘foolish decision’

An Aghamore man who made what his solicitor described as “as a foolish decision” when he attempted to drive a short distance home after being out drinking was disqualified from driving for three years and fined €500 at Claremorris District Court this week. Nicholas Cunnane, Meal Traine, Aghamore, Ballyhaunis, pleaded guilty to the charge in court.
