Ring encourages more inclusion in sport

At the national launch of the annual Sports Partnership report in Westport, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, said that he intends to encourage the participation in sport over the coming years and wants sports to be “funded from the bottom up”.

Gradient not changed on Castle Street footpath, town council told

The issue of the gradient on the new footpath on Castle Street was raised at the June meeting of Castlebar Town Council. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne told the meeting that he had representations about the gradient on the footpath changing. Cllr Frank Durcan also told the meeting it had been changed and made steeper and would be very difficult for someone to get up the hill with a wheelchair. However town manager Seamus Granahan told the meeting, “The gradient hasn’t changed at all, the road has been raised all right but the gradient hasn’t change. There is a strict formula that is used in relation to where the entrance to the doorways in the shop and houses are and that hasn’t changed.”

Skate park is no drinking den

Westport town councillor Martin Keane raised a concern at this week’s Westport Joint Policing Committee meeting that the new skate park on the West Road might turn into a drinking den, as he has become aware of complaints that have been made in relation to certain individuals who are supplying alcohol to youths at this park.

A 68-year-old man, who has 40 previous convictions, was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday for a drink driving charge.

Inspector Joe Doherty outlined that on Saturday August 28 2010 at 2.15pm, in the area of Knockegan, Ballina Garda John Barrett observed a tractor drive in the middle of the road towards the patrol car. Garda Barrett stopped the tractor which was being driven by Michael O’Hara, Behy, Crossmolina.

A Cong man was disqualified from driving for two years at Castlebar District Court after he pleaded guilty to drink driving. Philip Lydon with an address at Salmon Weir, Cong, was stopped by Garda Sean Lydon at Rathkelly, Ballinrobe, on September 19 2010 at 1.53am while the garda was carrying out a mandatory alcohol test checkpoint.

A Kiltimagh man who pleaded guilty to drink driving after he was stopped by gardaí was convicted and fined €600 and disqualified from driving for three years this week. Peter Byrne, Cuilgar, Kiltimagh, pleaded guilty in Castlebar District Court.

Woman ordered to pay double the price of items she stole

A Castlebar woman with a number of previous convictions was ordered to pay a shop owner €15 after she pleaded guilty to theft from his premises. The court was told that on February 15 2011 Winifred Reilly entered the Emo filling station in Kilkelly, Co Mayo, where she stole two sandwiches and a orange drink to the value of €7.88. The owner of the shop when he looked at the CCTV saw Reilly commit the theft.
