Three year driving ban for man who made ‘foolish decision’

An Aghamore man who made what his solicitor described as “as a foolish decision” when he attempted to drive a short distance home after being out drinking was disqualified from driving for three years and fined €500 at Claremorris District Court this week. Nicholas Cunnane, Meal Traine, Aghamore, Ballyhaunis, pleaded guilty to the charge in court.

The court was told that at 12.15am on November 29 2010 Cunnane was stopped by gardaí when he was spotted driving with only his parking lights on. He was arrested and brought to Castlebar Garda Station where he gave a breath sample which returned a reading of 86mg per 100ml of breath.

Solicitor for Cunnane, Mr Evan O’Dwyer, told the court that his client, an unemployed carpenter, had been out earlier that night and snow had begun to set in and he made “a foolish decision” to drive the length of the village home.
