The public's need for information and assistance on legal matters continues to rise across Ireland, says legal rights group FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centres) in its annual report for 2011, with some 25,000 people contacting its telephone information line and legal advice centres last year.

At last week’s Mayo County Council meeting the issue of Mayo Abbey proposed new sewage scheme was discussed in accordance with part 8 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations 2001. This followed submissions received from Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The website, businessregulation.ie, has been launched by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, as part of the Action Plan for Jobs.

Minister for Education and Skills Ruairí Quinn has outlined a process by which primary schools under denominational patronage, typically a Catholic Bishop, can be divested to another patron, such as Educate Together, to provide greater diversity of schools. The process includes a parental survey to ascertain the views of parents in the areas where these changes are to be considered. It will be piloted in 44 areas across the country, including Ballina, Castlebar and Westport, driven by the Department of Education and Skills. This process is expected to happen during October and November this year.

Mayo people have been offered an opportunity to earn thousands of euros simply by making a couple of phone calls. Connect Ireland, an initiative designed to tap the Irish diaspora abroad for investments and the creation of work opportunities back home, has already awarded a €45,000 payout to one Castlebar man for passing on a personal business contact. This contact, who was looking to expand outside his base abroad, has since committed to creating 30 new jobs in Carlow.
