Iarnród Éireann is running a special train for tomorrow’s Ireland v Russia soccer international at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.The rain returns to Galway after the match, departing Dublin Heuston Station at 11.05pm, serving Tullamore, Athlone, Ballinasloe and Athenry stations. Iarnród Éireann advises supporters that they will not be able to board trains unless they are in possession of train ticket.

The Galway Lawn Tennis Club is hosting an open day on Saturday for anyone who wishes to view its facilities between 12 noon and 5pm. Coaches and players will be on hand for visitors to try the tennis, squash and badminton facilities, in addition to the range of indoor activities offered at the Threadneedle Road club. Indoor facilities include a sauna/steam room, pool and tennis tables, and sports shop, while the club also hosts a variety of outings, including hill walking, golf, and theatre and cinema trips. A special membership rate is available on the day.

The last month of the League of Ireland season is usually packed with significant matches for Galway United and that is exactly the case again this year as Sean Connor’s charges face a crucial contest at Oriel Park tomorrow against Dundalk.
Galway are a point behind UCD in the table and, with a game against the students scheduled for Saturday week in Terryland Park, there is no disguising the importance of the next eight days. Points must be pocketed if Galway are to avoid the dreaded relegation play-off, which would be a monumental achievement considering the severe budgetary restraints in the west.

• The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club had three fighters out on Sunday at the Dragon Wars promotion in Kilkenny and all three were victorious. Martin Murray totally outclassed his opponent Connor Myers from Shannon, while mum of two Yvonne McNevin easily outscored her Kilkenny opponent Mags Walsh over the three rounds in her first outing. IKF All Ireland welterweight champ Alex Novac took the laurels in an international bout against Andrew Davis from Wales.Novac, who holds the title at 67kg, weighed in at 69.5 for the fight on Sunday while the Welshman tipped the scales at 71.9kg. Novac will now drop back to welterweight to make a mandatory first defence of his title against No 1 contender John O' Shea on October 17 and this fight will again be in Kilkenny.
