Early ineptitude costs Moycullen against hungry Neptune

Thu, Dec 02, 2010

In their most disappointing performance of what has been a difficult season, Moycullen sleptwalked through the first two quarters on Saturday, managing only 25 points by the half at which stage they trailed by 29 points to an efficient Neptune side. Unable to finish open chances and turning over the ball far to often, they gifted a confident Neptune outfit score after score. Credit the home team with their second half effort, sparked by Michael Dowd with a great lay up down the lane right at the start of the third quarter. Garnett Griffin, playing his first game after his knee surgery last summer, hit some fine open shots in the second half run as Moycullen opened up and began to build some momentum. They outscored Neptune in the second half but the damage had been done in the first quarter and there was no catching the Cork team. The most frustrating element of the result was the fact that, despite the scoreline, Neptune were far from an unbeatable force and just capitalised on Moycullen's shortcomings. The team have a two week break now to sort out their difficulties before an away trip to Killester on Dec 18.

Maree’s winning streak continues in Tralee

Thu, Dec 02, 2010

Maree stay top of the Southern Conference with the best record in the Men’s National League, following their 76 – 70 Saturday night win over Meadowlands St Brendan’s in Mercy Mounthawk gym, Tralee. Maree’s Liam Conroy was the game’s high scorer with 25 points, while Brendan’s dual star Michael Quirke was good for 22. Maree’s record moves to six wins and one loss; St Brendan’s drop to four and two.

Maree sent an eight-strong squad to Kerry, minus some key players - Danny Finn sidelined through an ankle injury, Peter Finn with study commitments in London , and Colm O’Hagan, Brian Kelly and Ciaran Harte on duty with the NUIG team in the 2010 Fresher’s tournament in UL. St Brendan’s were without another of their dual starts, Kieran Donaghy. Maree played at a feverish pace whenever fast break opportunities presented, and continued to play the high-intensity man-to-man defense that has become the hallmark of the Oranmore-Maree-based side. All the Maree starters scored in the first quarter, with Conroy good for five points, and Dave Hansberry grabbing 4. Maree Captain Darren Callanan was inspirational at the heart of the defense. He pulled down 12 rebounds, ably assisted by Sarunas Zvirblinskas with 7, despite the attention of Kerry big men Quirke and Saulius Marcinkevicius. Both Callanan and Zvirblinskas shipped mouth injuries, with the latter having to sit out some minutes due to the blood rule. At the end of the first quarter, St Brendan’s held a slender 17 – 15 lead.

Maree win major Cork Open Boys tournament

Thu, Dec 02, 2010

On Saturday in Gurranabraher Cork, Maree won the biggest under 14 Boys basketball tournament in the country, beating Neptune 47 – 39 in the final. The one-day competition featured Sligo all stars, Neptune , Moycullen, Blue Demons, Ballincollig, St Brendan’s, Fr Mathews and Carrig na bhFear. This Maree team has shown dramatic improvement from last season, when they failed to advance from the pool stage of the Under 13 Cork Open. A sign of the form that was to pay such dividends on Saturday was Maree’s performance in reaching the final of the Limerick Celtics tournament in September.
