It was a good afternoon’s work for the Galway hurlers in O’Moore Park in Portlaoise on Saturday as they saw off Dublin by 4-21 to 0-19 in the division 1A relegation replay.

• Bearna Basketball Club annual 5K family fun run is being held on Sunday April 22 at 11.30am from Bearna National School, in support of the club and local charities. Everyone welcome.
•Some 200 children turned out for the Rahoon Newcastle Open Day which took place on Saturday. Juvenile training takes place in Tonabrucky -u-6, u-8 and u-10 training is at 6,0pm on Wednesday and Friday, and u-12 at 6.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

• The Galway Ladies minor team overcame Roscommon in Menlough on Saturday. In what was a must-win game to keep their Connacht hopes alive, Galway on 2-10 to 0-7. The ladies now have a weekend off before they face Sligo in the final round-robin game, in which a win can keep their Connacht final hopes alive. The u14s, however, suffered a heavy round-robin championship defeat on Thursday to an excellent Roscommon side. As a result, they must win in their next match away to Mayo on Saturday. This takes place in Kiltimagh at 5pm. The seniors continue their preparation for the league semi-final against Clare in Birr on April 29, and Con Moynihan is hoping a few injuries to players will have cleared up in time for the clash.

Moycullen girls topped their group, beating both St Mary’s, Castleisland, and Sligo Warriors on Saturday before edging Limerick Celtics by 34 - 32 in the last quarter of the division 1 semi-final on Sunday. Paired against surprise packets Killinkere, who beat a fancied Brunell team from Cork, this decider was a thriller. Moycullen enjoyed a great start to lead 14- 4 after the first quarter, but Killenkere came back strongly to reduce the deficit to three at half time, and with just three minutes on the clock in the fourth, they took the lead.

The Mayo footballers will have received a huge boost from last Sunday’s narrow victory over Kerry in the National League semi-final.
To come back from four points down to Kerry with six minutes to go in Croke Park, and then go on and beat their nemesis by a late Richie Feeney point in injury time of extra-time, is a big fillip to them for the year ahead.

Positive news on the injury front for Galway football was the return last weekend of Michael Meehan and Seán Armstrong for their respective clubs in the county league.
Meehan has been out for a long time with an ongoing and serious ankle injury, and it was a big boost for everyone who loves football in the county to hear he was able to hit a few points and get back into some competitive action with Caltra last weekend.

Ireland’s cricketing legend, all-rounder Trent Johnston is coming to Galway to visit the county club on Saturday between 12 and 1:30pm.
Johnston will be at the County Galway Cricket Club's ground at Lydican near Galway Airport, and will greet and sign autographs. He will bring with him the ICC World Twenty20 qualifying trophy, which Ireland won last month by defeating Afghanistan in the final in Dubai where Johnston broke into the top 20 rated bowlers in the world in this form of cricket. T20, or 20 overs per side cricket, is the shortest, fastest and, some say, the most exciting form of cricket played internationally.
