Coming out of Dublin last Sunday evening on the motorway was a surreal experience. The motorway at 7.30pm was like some kind of mobile car park for Galway supporters as they trekked West after seeing their team play their part in one of the best hurling finals in years.

• Galwegians RFC's new floodlights will be offically launched and switched on by Mayor Terry O'Flaherty at Crowley Park on Saturday. The Mayor will be joined by Billy Glynn, president of the IRFU and life member of Galwegians.To celebrate the occasion, a full afternoon's activity is lined up, with a range of family entertainment on offer to complete an action-packed day. There will be a series of friendly matches on view throughout the afternoon and evening, with the schedule as follows: 4.30pm u-16 Galwegians v Monivea; 5.15pm Women Galwegians v Connacht Selection; 6pm Over 50 Galwegians v Corinthians Tag; 6,25pm Over 40 Galwegians v Mixed Selection Tag; 7.15pm Galwegians 1st XV v University College Cork.

The South Galway Athletic Club annual four mile Kilcolgan Castle Run will take place on Saturday, September 8 at 2pm.
The route starts and finishes at the picturesque Kilcolgan Castle in the small south Galway village on the Limerick Road, and to encourage young people into the sport, a special one kilometre run for eight to 15-year-olds will be held before the main event at 1pm.

Mike Clarkson, the current Galway Lawn Tennis Club champion, completed a remarkable double at Fitzwilliam last weekend. The teenager won both the boys’ u-16 doubles and mixed doubles to add to his previous victories in both events at u-12 level.
Clarkson, who is trained by Jonathan Klampe and travels to N-Zone in Malahide every Sunday for coaching with the Michael Nugent squad, reached the singles finals at the Galway Senior Open, the Leinster Junior Open, and won the Castlebar Junior Open. He also won his first ITS matches (International u-18 Competition) this summer in Donnybrook and Rushbrooke.
