Galway girls force Cork to a draw

Thu, May 28, 2009

The Galway Ladies junior team faced a much-fancied Cork in the Aisling McGing Tournament at St Coleman's Gort on Sunday, having suffered a heavy defeat from the Leesiders last year. However the two sides produced a ding-dong battle from the start, and despite the odds, produced a worthy performance to share the spoils.

Galway had the breeze and were first on the score board with a pointed free from Michelle Burke. After about seven minutes Cork's Grace Kearney struck for goal. Although Gillian O'Connor responded with a point for Galway, Cork then hit a purple patch with a goal and a point to give them a two-goal advantage against the wind. The Galway management introduced a sub Emma Curley at centre field and made a few other positional changes. Curley’s experience and football skill steadied the ship and in the 10 minutes to half time Galway scored a goal from Becky Walsh and two points from Michelle Burke to reduce the deficit to 2-3 to 1-4.

GAA — Part of what we are

Thu, May 21, 2009

Everyone involved in the world of GAA has a story to tell. If you trace their roots back far enough, there has to have been a starting connection point between them and the GAA.

For me, involvement with gaelic games started many miles from anywhere near a maroon jersey.

Coaching and encouragement will keep

There is a lot of water under the bridge since the founding members of the Gaelic Athletic Association met in the now famous Hayes Hotel in Thurles back in 1884. I don't think Michael Cusack, Maurice Davin and his associates who gathered on that momentous occasion could ever in their wildest dreams have envisaged how significant an association they were just about to form and what an impact it was going to have on the people of Ireland.

For the Kerrys, Dublins, and Tyrones of this world success is measured in all-Ireland titles. Provincial honours are little more than a stepping stone to greater things.
