Galway’s first NFL win over Dublin in almost thirty years

Thu, Feb 19, 2009

Galway produced an epic, lyrical performance in the first half against Dublin last Sunday afternoon. The standing ovation they received as they trouped off at half time for their Jaffa cakes and tea summed up the mood of the paying customers in the stand as they found themselves whipped up into a real "feel-good" moment by the superb free-flowing football of the forwards.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Dublin defence was atrocious in some instances, the three first-half goals by Michael Meehan, Sean Armstrong, and Paul Conroy were all fine scores, giving Galway a 3-7 to 0-5 half-time lead. Of course the conductor in chief was Padraig Joyce.

Galwegians have real chance to qualify for another cup semi-final

Thu, Feb 12, 2009

Galwegians have a real chance of qualifying for the AIB Cup semi-finals for a second year in succession when they host Ballynahinch on Saturday at Crowley Park.

The Galway club has enjoyed the best of the quarter-final draws, being pitted against one of only two division two outfits now left in the competition. Buccaneers, the second team from Connacht, face a tougher assignment away to Garryowen, Young Munster host UCC, and Dolphin and Cork Con face each other in the second all-Munster derby. Unusually, no Leinster side advanced to this stage of the competition.

•Corinthians are riding a high at present. With the senior side currently sitting in pole position in division three of the AIB League, the club’s u-20s have now reached the AIL division one play-offs. Last weekend they overcame Bruff by 25 - 7, posting both the win and a bonus point to qualify ahead of Cork Con, Shannon, and Young Munster. Led by captain James Robinson, Corinthians opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a well worked try off a scrum when No.8 Liam Carpenter broke left and fed winger Kevin Russell who raced from the half way line before finding the supporting Brendan Carpenter who finished off. The Corinthian pack dominated the bigger Bruff counterparts, and after sustained pressure in which man of the match David Ott was prominent, James Robinson crashed over for a well deserved second try. Bruff countered with a try, but Corinthians grabbed try No 3 when winger Aengus O'Connell set up Finn Gormley for a 15-7 half-time lead. It was over within minutes of the restart when Colin Raftery’s line-out steal produced the fourth try which winger Kevin Russella scored.

Galway v Dublin provides highlight of weekend’s NFL action

Thu, Feb 12, 2009

It is funny what makes you feel loved and appreciated. I have just spent the last 20 minutes talking to God on the big white telephone with our three-years-old Neasa rubbing my back, giving me hugs, and telling me that it will be OK.. “You’ll be better soon…” was the recurring mantra.

Unfortunately the six-years-old was much less supportive - life hardens them quickly - and she contemptuously told me that they were not real “pukes” at all as I was not making any large splashes. Having not eaten in three days, I didn’t expect much else. However, what took the biscuit - sorry - was when she told me to “finish up”, or she’d be late for school.

Calasanctius hit the target again

Thu, Feb 05, 2009

Galway’s success in national basketball continues as Calasanctius Oranmore team celebrate victory in the Girls u-19 A Final Schools League final. Oranmore overcame Mercy Waterford by 70 - 69 in a hugely entertaining final at the National Basketball Arena. With little between the sides throughout, Waterford held a one-point lead at half time, but Calasanctius grabbed a four-point lead to set up a dramatic finish. With 20 seconds left on the clock a massive three-point play from Mercy’s Tracey Power got the Waterford school to within one point, but the Calasanctius girls held their nerve to claim the silverware for a second successive year. The MVP was awarded to Oranmore’s Carol McCarthy who grabbed 21 points.

Corinthians returned to pole position in the AIB League division three with a deserved 25 - 20 victory over Portadown in Chambers Park.

Although Corinthians started well with centre Wayne Williams on target with a third minute penalty, the home side, despite playing against the wind, grabbed the initiative.
