Footballers season begins with Galway v Mayo clash in Air Dome

Padraic Joyce begin his third season at the helm of the Galway footballers this coming Friday in the NUI Galway Connacht Air Dome.

The Tribesmen will be seeking a small slice of revenge for last year's Connacht final defeat to bitter rivals Mayo. Both teams received a bye to the semi-final of this FBD League, and the victors will face either Sligo or Roscommon in the final following Sligo’s entertaining 1-21 to 1-17 win over Leitrim on Monday night.

Pitted in a head-to-head battle for votes from club delegates with football committee chairman Kevin Clancy, Bellew ran out the resounding winner on a 167-97 final tally from the 264 votes cast at this week's annual convention.

After surviving a scare against Leitrim champions Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins to progress to Sunday’s Connacht club semi-final, Val Daly’s Mountbellew Moylough have had an additional two weeks to get rid of their county final hangover. Now they are set for a titanic battle against a very tough and physical Padraig Pearses when they meet in Hyde Park on Saturday (1.30pm).

Given their water-tight defence, marshalled by John Daly and Billy Mannion, Mountbellew had barely coughed up a goal chance against Corofin and Moycullen, but yet they conceded two defensively sloppy goals in their Connacht quarter-final. This must be corrected if they are to overturn a Roscommon club side with the amount of experience Pearses have gathered over the last number of years.

St Thomas’ remain on track for a fourth county title win in a row after comprehensively out-hurling Gort in the re-arranged senior semi-final that took place last Sunday in Pearse Stadium.

Watched on by the new Galway management team of Henry Shefflin, Richie O’Neill, and Kevin Lally, St. Thomas’ were rarely troubled by a Gort side whose preparations were so obviously thrown into turmoil by recent events which had forced cancellations on successive weekends.

Mountbellew-Moylough survived a scare last Sunday in Pairc Seán MacDiarmada against Leitrim champions Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins. Val Daly's team eventually progressed to this weekend's Connacht club semi final.

Ballinamore struck for two opening period goals to take a six point lead in Carrick-on-Shannon. The goals came from Niall McGovern and Tom Prior which gave the Leitrim outfit a 2-5 to 0-5 interval advantage over their Galway counterparts.

The quarter-final stage of the Brooks Group Galway senior hurling championship has arrived with St Thomas’ clear favourites to claim their fifth title in six years after last year’s finalists Turloughmore were dramatically knocked out by Kilnadeema-Leitrim.

Seemingly cruising with a 10-point lead in hand in the second half, Turloughmore suffered after Daithí Burke was dismissed for a second yellow card.
