Late summer series begins for Galway sailors

The Galway docks was expected to be awash with colour last evening with the second of the Galway Bay Sailing Club’s Alfa Romeo Late Summer Seriers due to finish in the city.

Sailing out of Rinville, the cruisers will complete their race in the docks to join the official welcome to Ireland’s Volvo Ocean Race team, the Green Dragon, to her home port. The 70ft yacht is due to leave Galway today after a four day visit.

There was great success for the Tribesmen Rowing Club in the European Rowing Championships held at Inniscarra Lake in Cork over the weekend.

The Coxed Eight rowed on Friday and were the Bronze Medal Winners in a tense, nail biting finish. The finish was so close, in fact, that Italy were celebrating victory of the bronze medal until a photo finish confirmed it was Ireland that were ahead. France and The Netherlands won the Gold and Silver medals respectively in this competition. The Coxed Eight team was made up of Kate Rushe, Lisa Dilleen, Aisling Harris, Katie Barrett, Aifric Keogh, Holly Nixon, Orla McEvoy, Sarah, and Rachel Egan.

The Fahey Sales Grand Prix league is set for a thrilling finale in the coming weeks with three of the region’s leading riders battling it out for top honours. Darragh Kenny from Offaly won Saturday’s Loughrea Grand Prix but it was the performance of Ballinasloe’s Damian Griffin that proved crucial as his second place finish moved him within five points of overall leader and reigning champion Carl Hanley.

The Galway Races are such an intrinsic part of the local as well as national culture, it seems like they have been taking place forever. For many people the Galway Races are the event to go to and they are looking forward to it all year long. To some the main attraction of the event is the old friends and new people you get to meet, to others it’s the atmosphere of excitement and glamour, and to others still it’s the very passion for watching horses race and perhaps engage in a little betting. Although the first Ballybrit race meeting, lasting two days, took place in 1869, a lot has changed since.
