•An Everton academy coach will visit the Power Soccer School of Excellence in Galway in January. Players interested in being coached by the Everton coach can enrol on the Everton Way through Power Soccer - an on-line-coaching tool designed for young players to develop their game. •The Galway Bay Sailing Club held its annual laying up supper and prize giving at the weekend. During the year the dinghy fleets competed in 72 races, while the cruiser fleets held 52 races including the King of the Bay series. The junior section have had a very busy year, participating in training and sailing from April to November, while several of the junior members had successes on the national and regional circuit. Yannick Lemonnier, rear commodore dinghies, presented the prizes to the dinghy fleets. Pascal Lally, Vincent Jordan, and Gerry Drudy were the main winners in the mono-hulls, while Gerry Murray, Tony Murphy and Tim Breen won in the multi-hulls. The main cruiser winners were: Class 1, Joie de Vie, That's Life, and Catalpa; Class 2, Rocodor, Silver Foam, and Siamsa. The King of the Bay Trophy was presented to Glenn Cahill, owner of Joie de Vie. Pierce Purcell was presented with the Michael Donohue Trophy, having been voted the Club Volunteer of the Year by the members. Rear commodore of cruisers, Dave Vinnell, paid special tribute to the crew of Ireland West who won the Round Ireland Race. Presentations were also made to Ian Quinn, Kieran Moran, Eugene Burke, and Sheila Baynes, on behalf of her late husband David, who took on a mammoth fundraising task 21 years ago to clear the debt incurred by the club and thus saved it from folding.

Established in 1980, Corofin United FC has recently purchased land and developed two playing pitches, plus a training pitch at Myles Park in the village. This is the first phase of a five-year plan which also includes the development of a clubhouse and all-weather playing facilities. In addition to the usual races, there will also be an auction, including a signed T-shirt belonging to Pádraig Harrington, and a host of signed jerseys that include soccer greats Eric Cantona and Ronaldo, an Irish soccer jersey signed by a number of the players plus manager Giovanni Trapattoni, a Connacht Rugby jersey, a Galway football jersey, and a Wexford football jersey signed by Mattie Forde.

•Galwegians are in action on Saturday when they play their fisrt AIB Cup fixture this season. They host Highfield in Crowley Park in this postponed second round fixture. Highfield advanced with a 13-6 victory over Sunday’s Well, but Galwegians should prove too strong for this division two side which currently lies 11th in the league. Galwegians, who advanced to the semi-finals before losing 5-8 to Shannon last season, have another great opportunity to go through - the winners will play division three outfit Nenagh Ormond in the next round. Buccaneers have already advanced following their superb victory over Clontarf.
