Galway supporters will be a tad disappointed that for the second year in a row Kevin Walsh’s team will have to travel for four of their seven fixtures. And with five Ulster teams in the division, Tyrone, Derry, Armagh, Fermanagh and Cavan – making it like a mini-Ulster championship - points will be hard to come by.

This weekend sees the opening cross country race of the season, the relaunched National Short Course Championships, which will feature several Galwegian athletes.

Some of the county's top cross country runners taking part include Kathryn Casserly of Castlegar, who will hope for a top 20 finish, along with a strong GCH ladies squad that includes Connacht champion Niamh Hennelly, Esther O'Flaherty, Maeve Brassil and Jean O'Connor. Cian Corcoran and Seamus Leddy will represent the GCH men over the 4km distance.

Moycullen edged out in final quarter by league leaders

SSE Airtricity Moycullen ran league-leaders C & S UCC Demons close in their New Year's fixture at NUIG Kingfisher, but lost in the final quarter by 77-68.

Moycullen, still missing players through injury, opened the game firing, with Kyle Cunningham, Sean Candon and Dylan Cunningham finding their range from the three-point line, while Paul Freeman and Joseph Tummon converted inside, helping them into an eight-point lead. However Demons found their touch through American Lehmon Colbert who connected on a number of occasions to close the gap to 23-20 at the break.
