Tedfest takes to the road for mental health charity

Tedfest, the annual celebration of the comedy classic Father Ted, returns to Inis Mór next month. This year organisers are asking people to cycle to Galway before the event to raise funds for online mental health support group Turn2Me.org

Tedfest will take place on Inis Mór on Saturday February 23 and Sunday February 24. A group of participants will undertake Ride 2 Tedfest, a sponsored cycle from Athlone to Galway, on the Thursday before the festival and travel to Inis Mór Craggy Island the following day for a weekend of ecclesiastically themed fun.

Unlicensed pilot breached rules of the air in Dunmore crash

An unlicensed pilot who flew an aircraft into power lines not far from where large crowds gathered for an event in Dunmore last year had breached the rules of the air by flying at low height and thereby endangering the public.

A report by the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) was released this week and revealed that the 63-year-old male pilot of the Powerchute Kestral (microlight) G-MWFI aircraft had conducted a low ‘fly-by’ over a field where a vintage farm equipment rally was being held at Carrowpadden, Dunmore, on August 5, 2012. At approximately 2.06pm the aircraft then struck and damaged a low-voltage electricity power line which caused the aircraft to hit the ground. The pilot, who suffered minor injury, was also found to be unlicensed at the time and the aircraft which had been de-registered by the UK in 2011, did not have a permit to fly.

Gaelscoil Dara, Renmore, entered a Facebook competition run by the English company Wicksteed Playscapes, to win playground equipment to the value of £25,000. After diligent efforts were made by parents of the students to share the link and encourage their online friends to vote for Gaelscoil Dara, 1,737 votes were secured which allows the school to progress to the next stage of the contest for which 10 schools have been shortlisted. A panel of adjudicators will visit the schools later in the month to determine which is the one most deserving of the prize. Parents, teachers, and the student body will team up to prove their determination to win. The children must exhibit their passion through artistic media, why they believe their school should be selected to win.
