Pyschiatric nurses from Galway and Roscommon will gather in the Clayton Hotel, Galway, tonight to consider the ongoing dispute over staffing and patient safety at the acute psychiatric unit in UHG.
The dispute has already led to a lunchtime protest by staff at the hospital last week. Noel Giblin, national secretary of the PNA, stated that the organisation was “overwhelmed by the level of support we received”, from off-duty nurses, non-nursing medical professionals, the public, and local politicians.

Galway’s hospitals are being asked to review their procedures for management of blood monitoring equipment following unannounced inspections at the hospitals by the Health Information and Quality Authority.
HIQA, in two reports on the inspections published this week, has raised concerns that poor management of equipment could put patients at risk of contracting hepatitis and other blood-borne pathogens.

The loss of the Garth Brooks concerts “will make other acts think twice before scheduling events” in Ireland and could impact on the State’s application to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

He believes Ireland’s capacity to attract and host large events has been called into question by Garth Brooks decision not to play any concert in Ireland - following the granting of a licence for only three out of the five shows the US country singer was due to play in Croke Park.

The funding, which was granted under the Oscar Sports Grant Aid National Funding, will also include the erection of floodlights. The grant was applied for by Galway City Council on a matched funding basis.

Researchers based in NUI Galway have been awarded research funding through the Enterprise Partnership Scheme to examine the Galway Bay marine environment and how coastal marine conditions affect the day to day lives of the Galway public.
In partnership with SmartBay Ireland, an investment of €96,000 has been made which will bring together a team of researchers from NUIG and DCU to develop research, making use of the National Marine Test and Demonstration Facility, managed by SmartBay Ireland in Galway Bay.

The first Irish language ever made has premiered at a renowned Italian festival of rediscovered and restored film; the short, by Man of Aran director Robert Flaherty and featuring some of the main cast of the Aran feature, was thought to have been lost forever when all known copies were destroyed in a fire more than 70 years ago.
Oidhche Sheanchais, an 11-minute film featuring Aran islanders from the Man of Aran cast listening to a story told by seanchai Seáinín Tom Ó Dioráin, was the first ‘talkie’ to be filmed in Irish and was made in London in 1934 while the cast were recording post-synch sound for Man of Aran.
