Rural areas face long wait for high speed broadband, warns Ó Cuív

Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív says the Government’s National Broadband Scheme doesn’t provide fast enough connections and will be redundant before its roll-out is completed.

The current plan only provides speeds of 30 Mbps, when high speed broadband is normally in the region of 100 Mbps to 1Gbps. Deputy Ó Cuív explained that the National Broadband Scheme is taking too long to roll out and will not provide a high speed service for users in rural areas.

Award for Yeats Ballylee Mile at Council Golden Mile event

The programme is aimed at Transition, 5th and 6th year students and will be run on campus on January 27 and February 3, 10, and 17 2016. NUI Galway Mini Med School is designed to give students a taste of what it would be like to study a healthcare-related degree at the University, while encouraging them to pursue their interests. Following a year of strong tourism growth, hotels and guesthouses in Galway are upbeat going into 2016, according to the latest quarterly barometer from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). Local hoteliers have benefitted from a 13 per cent increase in overseas visitors to Ireland over the last 12 months, including significant growth key markets such as North America (visitors up 13 per cent), Britain (up 11 per cent) and the rest of Europe (up 14 per cent).

Searches continue for missing student Michael Bugler

Searches are continuing around Galway city for missing student Michael Bugler. The Ennis native, who is a studying law at NUI Galway, has been missing since the early hours of last Friday morning. The 20 year old was last seen walking near his home in The Claddagh at 1am after he left the Quay’s Bar. CCTV footage tracks him as far as passing the Claddagh Church as he appears to be on his way home to Fairhill Road.

The tragic death of Ballinderreen boy Mark Fordham has shocked and saddened the tight knit south Galway communities of Ballinderreen, Kilcolgan, Kinvara, and Ardrahan. The seven-year-old lost his life following an accident in the yard of his home in Keamsella on Saturday morning.
