The work of five local historians have contributed enormously to the ‘cultural capital’ on which Galway’s vitality and identity continues to thrive, according to Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Professor of History at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Speaking at the civic reception hosted by Mayor Terry O’Flaherty to honour the work of James Casserly, William Henry, Tom Kenny, Peadar O’Dowd and Galway Advertiser chairman Ronnie O’Gorman, Professor Ó Tuathaigh said the work of the five people over many decades had provided a rich narrative of all aspects of the history of Galway and its environs.

Call to remove working barriers for people with disabilities

People with disabilities in Galway face challenges and barriers to finding, securing, and retaining jobs, according to the Irish Association of Supported Employment which is calling on more to be done in the working world to ensure the promotion of more inclusive employment practices.

According to the Central Statistics Office, there are some 30,175 people in Galway with some sort of disability accounting for 12 per cent of the county’s population. Adults within this group are substantially more likely than the rest of the general population to face many challenges in the workplace, according to the IASE, a national organisation promoting equal employment opportunities for people with disability through supported employment.

Airport hosts city’s new park and ride service

A new six month pilot park and ride service based at Galway Airport in Carnmore opened this week, with bus service to and from the city centre every 20 to 30 minutes.

The new service, which will operate for the next six months, opened on Monday. The airport has parking for more than 600 vehicles and is accessible and signposted from the Tuam Road, the Monivea Road, the M6 Motorway, and the Dublin Road from Oranmore.

If you told us at the beginning of the year that we’d have two popes living together in the one house in Rome, one in the posh end and the other in the modest end; or that we would never ever be able to listen to Two Little Boys again and feel the same way about it; that we’d find out we’ve been eating horses; that we could never again watch Coronation Street and feel sorry for Ken Barlow in the way we used to when he was having his eye wiped by Mike Baldwin, or indeed watch the joyous end of a marathon without feeling any emotion other than joy, you would scarcely believe it.

2013 did not set out to be any sort of a remarkable year, but the four and half months of it that have happened so far have been filled with drama and intrigue and surprise — and this surprise continued yesterday morning when the sizeable proportion of the football-following public who follow Manchester United had their JFK moment.
