Galway roads get €1.1 million for storm damage repairs

A total of €1.1 million has been allocated to the repair of roads throughout County Galway, which were damaged by a series of storms this year. The funding will come through a special maintenance grant.

The funding was announced yesterday by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, and has been welcomed by the Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish. Dep Grealish said the extent of the damage from the various storms meant the “normal allocation” the Galway County Council receives for roads upkeep “just wouldn’t cover the repairs needed”.

Ó Cuív demands Inishbofin coastal erosion study ‘be conducted without delay’

A coastal erosion and flood risk management study for Inishbofin, which was approved for funding in 2015, has still not been carried out, a situation a leading Galway TD has called “disappointing”.

According to Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív, €90,000 was approved by the Office of Public Works under its Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme. The TD raised the issue in the Dáil and was told by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, that “it would appear” the Galway County Council has “not completed this study or submitted any results of the study to the Office of Public Works”.

Athenry-Oranmore councillors reject proposed budget

Athenry-Oranmore councillors have voted by four to one to reject the proposed 2019 budget for the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District, saying the area’s property tax and commercial rates are being used to “subsidise the rest of the county”.

Independent councillor James Charity proposed the motion to reject the budget, on the basis that a system was being adopted which saw only nine per cent of the county budget allocated to an area with one of the highest populations in the county, and which is consistently showing major growth. The proposal was supported by councillors Gabe Cronnelly, Jim Cuddy, and Martina Kinnane, with Cllr Frank Kearney opposing.
